The Putumayo foothills forest has suffered, in recent decades, accelerated deforestation because of illegal wood use, expansion of the agricultural and housing frontier and illegal crops, among others. This situation, particularly notorious below 1000 meters above sea level, puts the sustainability of the mega biological diversity of the area at risk.
Carlec Ltd, editor of the series of scientific books 'Butterflies of Colombia,' within the framework of its Social Responsibility and with the desire to help preserve this ecosystem, with the support of its partners and family members, acquired in 2018 a 36-hectare property in Mocoa, Putumayo, located between 600 and 800 meters above sea level, to be converted into a nature reserve.
With Resolution 115 of July 30th, 2019, the National Parks of Colombia, part of Colombia’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, formalized the declaration of Natural Reserve of the Civil Society of the property under the name of Mocoa Andino Research Center & Ecolodge.
A research center is being built, and it will allow national and foreign scientists to work on cataloguing this biodiversity and create conservation and reforestation plans.
The reserve development plans have the following scopes:
-The study of Putumayo butterflies and their biological cycles, in order to design conservation plans for the most threatened species.
-The reception and lodging of national and foreign researchers that will study regional fauna and flora.
-A selective reforestation plan for the creation of a botanical garden, with special emphasis on the nutritional plants for butterflies, and endangered flora species.
-The creation of an Amazonian garden to rescue the ancestral knowledge of medicinal and edible plants of the regional indigenous communities.
- Supporting the development of eco-sustainable green business projects for rural communities, in coordination with Corpoamazonia and other local and national government institutions. These also will be in line with the civil society reintegration plans of the actors and victims of the armed conflict, and with the substitution plans of illicit crops. There will be activities of nature tourism to observe birds, butterflies, etc., creation of commercial butterfly farms, orchid and bromeliad crops, medicinal and edible plant crops of the region.
We invite you to visit us, or donate to help us finance our reforestation and conservation projects.
